Stay Warm & Dry at Night in a Public Use Cabin
If you’d like to get out and explore the Kenai Fjords National Park, but camping isn’t your style… one option is to rent one of the public use cabins. Aialik Bay has two public use cabins: the Holgate Cabin and the Aialik Cabin. These cabins are basic, but comfortable… and provide a warm, dry place to stay. Both cabins have basic wooden bunks (you provide your own sleeping bag and pad), propane heat, and an outhouse. We, as an outfitter, are not allowed to book the cabins – but you can reserve the cabin, and hire us to guide you around the bay while staying there. Just be sure to check on our availability before you book the cabin for specific dates! Click here to learn more about the cabins and how to reserve them.
Our pricing for these trips is the same as for our guided rental or fully outfitted camping trips, but you will also have the addition fee of the cabin rental. The gear that we provide is the same as on the camping trips (except we don’t need tents, of course!), so please read through the differences between guided rental and fully outfitted style trips.
Our Mothership trip in Kenai Fjords National Park is also a great option for exploring the National Park without camping. One advantage of the Mothership trip is that your home is mobile, so you can really get around to explore!
More Trip Info
We will host a mandatory pre-trip meeting the night before the trip at 7 pm at our kayak shop in downtown Seward. This is a great opportunity to meet your guide & other guests on the tour, discuss bear & ice safety, go over the itinerary and get any last minute questions answered. We will meet the following morning at 7am at the kayak shop, then head to the small boat harbor to meet the water taxi.
The water taxi will drop us off near the cabin, and we will start our adventure from there! Each cabin sits near many highlights of Aialik, so there will be no shortage of things to see.
We wait to build out exact itineraries two days before the trip, as local weather will dictate where the best paddling is during your trip. Using your pre-trip forms, we will build out an itinerary that aligns with your groups adventure goals!
The water taxi will return to meet us at our pick-up beach on the last day, and bring us home! We are typically back in Seward between 5-6pm.
- Water Taxi
We’ve been fortunate to work with our local water taxi, Weather Permitting, for over 10 years! Their captains are the most experienced in Seward and their main vessel, the Weather or Knot, comfortably fits up to 18 guests. The Weather or Knot was designed with passenger comfort in mind. Its catamaran hull provides a balanced, smooth ride & is perfect for coastal Alaska. Sit indoors and enjoy a cup of coffee/tea, or lounge on the covered back deck’s bench. We are incredibly grateful to be working with this experienced, professional water taxi!
- What Should I Wear?
For these trips, we ask you to wear synthetic layers of clothing – because cotton and jeans get really cold if they get wet. We also ask that you bring a raincoat and rain pants, since this is a coastal rainforest! We have rain gear for rent at our shop, should you need it.
Your feet might get wet when launching or landing, so please bring footwear that will keep you warm, that you’re comfortable walking in, and that you don’t mind potentially getting a bit wet (water sandals, running shoes, hiking boots, are all fine options).
If it seems like a cold day, we provide pogies (neoprene mitts for your hands while kayaking) which will keep your hands much warmer and more comfortable while you’re out there. You’ll also want to be sure to have your own bottle of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
If you do not have your own waterproof rain jackets and rain pants, we happily rent them at the kayak shop. Rain jacket rentals are $10.00 each, and rain pant rentals are also $10.00 each.
