Northwestern Fjord is the most remote location we paddle in. The entire fjord was created over the last hundred years as the glaciers retreated to reveal these stunning rock formations, coves, and rugged terrain. Northwestern is a relatively small fjord, and you'll be able to explore most of it during this 4-day trip. It's also incredibly well protected from the winds and waves, and makes for a fantastic escape from the activity of town. Curious harbor seals bob in the icy waters, and sea otters float in the protected coves. Check out this sample itinerary below:
Four Day Adventure...
** itinerary is subject to change due to weather and tides.
Day One:
Meet the water taxi at 8am for a spectacular ride through Resurrection Bay and out to Northwestern Fjord. You'll stop along the way to see Stellar Sea Lions hauled out on the rocks, and very often we'll spot orcas and humpbacks making their way through the frigid waters. We'll stop and enjoy these wildlife sightings, taking time for photos and learning along the way. Most likely, the water taxi will duck into Aialik Bay on the way out to drop off other paddlers, providing you with the opportunity to see more of Kenai Fjords National Park. The water taxi will drop us off at the moraine, where we'll enjoy lunch, pack up our gear, and hit the water! As we paddle along the coastline, we'll be watching for waterfalls rushing down the hillsides, and harbor seals swimming silently beside us. The peace and solitude of Northwestern will overwhelm and astonish you. It'll be a great afternoon of discovery, and a good introduction to paddling. We'll set up camp in the evening, have a good dinner, and settle in. All evening we can relax on the beach, watching and listening to the hanging glaciers as they calve off massive chunks of ice that tumble down the cliff faces.
Day Two:
Today we'll spend the day paddling to three tidewater glaciers. Anchor and Ogive both spill down the mountainsides, flowing like rivers to meet the sea. They are both impressive and beautiful tidewater glaciers, and we'll spend a while sitting in front of them... hoping for a brilliant show. As we then paddle toward Northwestern Glacier, the king of this fjord, we'll stop on the way for lunch at Redstone beach. After a hearty lunch, we'll head out and paddle toward Northwestern. Once we've had our fill of impressive glaciers calving before our eyes... we'll make our way back to camp for the night. Then it's time for another relaxing evening surrounded by incredible beauty.
Day Three:
Wake up to the rumbling of the hanging glaciers nearby. We'll do a short paddle to a nearby beach, and from there we'll change things up a bit. We'll go for an amazing walk alongside Southwestern Glacier - getting fantastic views over the fjord and the ice, and learning so much about how glaciers function. This is a pretty easy hike, but leads to such rewarding and memorable views. After our hike, we'll return to camp for lunch... and then pack up our gear and head off to a new campsite. This day will involve a great combination of both walking and kayaking - to keep the whole body limber! We'll pass another magical night in camp, enjoying the sights and sounds of this paradise.
Day Four:
Today we'll wake up and pack our gear and load our kayaks for the last time. We'll head out along a new strip of coastline, exploring the nooks and crannies of the the shoreline as we go, and making our way to the final pickup beach. Once our gear is ready and our stomachs are full, we'll board the water taxi for the ride home. Again, we'll most likely duck into Aialik Bay on the way home to pick up other paddlers. Yet another great chance to see how vastly different the two neighboring fjords are! We'll return to Seward around 6pm.
** Please keep in mind that this is only a sample itinerary. The real itinerary will be similar, but will be determined by the guide depending on tides, weather, and paddling abilities.
