Bear Glacier Day Trip: Packing List
Thanks for signing up for our Bear Glacier Day Trip! This trip is a wonderful way to escape the activity oftown, and get out to see wildlife and nature at its finest. It is also a great introduction to the sport of
kayaking. You'll be paddling in double kayaks, and your guide will provide basic instruction before you
even leave the beach.
The timing for this trip is completely dependent on the tides. Please confirm the time you need to arrive at
our office when you make your booking.
There are a few things that we ask you to bring for this adventure, in order to be well prepared for the
Alaskan weather. Our trips will run rain or shine... the only time we cancel trips is if the seas are too big for
the water taxi to safely transport you to and from the glacier. So, no matter what the weather - we want you
to be prepared for the day. We will provide each participant with a drybag - to carry extra layers of clothes
and a camera. This trip includes lunch, a light snack, hot drinks, and juice. If you would like to bring other
food along, you are more than welcome to do so. Please advise our office staff of any dietary restrictions, and
we will do our best to accommodate them.
We do rent "pogies" (neoprene mitts designed specifically for keeping your hands warm while kayaking) for $5 / day if you are interested. We also sell Sealskinz socks (waterproof socks to keep your feet dry) for $40 / pair.
Please be sure to have the following things with you:
- Sturdy hiking boots. You will be walking about an hour each way to and from the boat cache. This is
along rocky shores and over uneven terrain. Your feet WILL get wet on this trip. Please be prepared for
this.
- Medium to Large sized backpack. You will need to carry a significant amount of safety gear, group
paddling gear, food, etc in to the boat cache. This is an essential item.
- Synthetic clothing (cotton and jeans make you very cold if they get wet). Please have plenty of layers – it
can be VERY cold in Bear Glacier, and it is usually a very long day!
- Rain coat and rain pants – essential on a rainy day!
If you do not bring your own rain gear, we may require you to purchase the cheap $10 rain suit we sell in our
office, depending on the weather conditions.
- Comfortable footwear that can get wet
- Extra clothes - gloves, hat, warm fleece, etc. - in case you get cold or wet (we'll provide a drybag for these)
- Bottle of water (We sell these in our shop for $1)
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Camera, if you'd like
- Binoculars, if you'd like
